Oh friends, I am SO excited to share this peach blossom maternity photography session! If you remember the fall nature-inspired maternity session with Kaitlyn, this is somewhat similar. Early in the spring, I was looking online at something, and a vision flashed in my head: a maternity portrait among rows of pink blossoms with the white maternity gown flowing out behind the mother-to-be. I sat on this idea for a bit, since the cherry trees were already blooming, so I wondered if it was too late. But I was starting to read Big Magic which urges you to capture ideas before they find another home, and figured I should pursue the concept. I started looking up area farms to see if they had blossoming fruit trees, and got in touch with Megan at Douglas Farms on Sauvie Island. I put out a model call on Facebook and was connected with many lovely expectant mamas, and eventually chose Kelsey to work with. She was expecting her first baby, a little girl, and was about 35 weeks for our session.

There was a giant cherry at the front gate, and then a small wooded area, and beyond, a big hill of blossoming trees and other fields stretching away from view. It was so lovely!  Megan chatted with me about the farm and about peach trees.  Did you know peach blossoms are pink? I did not; I assumed they were white (and also that all pink flowering trees are cherries).  They’d just pruned the peach trees; they keep them short enough so that you don’t need a ladder; the trees were about my height. (So right away I was imagining bringing our 3 year olds out to pick juicy ripe peaches this summer!) As a result, there were still flowered branches covering the ground between the rows. This immediately intrigued me and I was excited to use them as foreground and background in some of the photos (see below).

Poor Kelsey was definitely cold and even got occasional goosebumps, but she soldiered on (we all warmed up as the session went on, too). Her boyfriend Joel was there too, and he acted as a second assistant for part of the shoot, and then at the end the two of them posed together for a few shots. (My friend Betty was my first assistant–thank you for your light-wrangling!)

Doesn’t Kelsey look AMAZING?! Just gorgeous, and super easy-going too. She really knows how to use her face for different expressions, and they were all just perfect for this dreamy, springtime look. She didn’t even mind laying down on the ground (we did use a blanket to avoid mudstains).

I mean, these photos are just a dream. I love love love what we created! I can’t wait to do more outdoor artistic maternity sessions throughout the seasons! If you’re interested in creating your own nature maternity session, get in touch!
